The perfect aperitif cocktail with espresso, vodka and a velvety foam topping
What do you prefer after a meal: coffee or a cocktail? If you find it hard to choose because you—like me—love both, the Espresso Martini is just for you. This coffee cocktail is currently having a huge rise in popularity and I can see why. It's SO good!
The Espresso Martini hasn't even been around that long: it was invented about 30 years ago in a bar in London. A tired customer wanted a cocktail but didn't know which one.“First wake me up, then f*ck me up” was her request. And so the cocktail was born; a combination of espresso, vodka and sweetened water.
1. Start by making a fresh espresso.
2. Fill the shaker with ice cubes (you'll need about seven; the shaker should be pretty full).
3. Add the vodka, liqueur, simple syrup and coffee to the shaker and shake well. You really need to shake vigorously, because that creates a lovely foam on the coffee and that's extra tasty.
4. Strain the cocktail through a sieve into a (chilled) glass and serve with three coffee beans. Cheers!

The secret to a good Espresso Martini is in the shaking. The harder and longer you shake, the nicer the foam on top of the cocktail. Use enough ice cubes so the shaker is well filled.
Preferably serve the Espresso Martini in a chilled glass for the best result. The three coffee beans on top are more than just decoration; they traditionally symbolize luck, health and luck. Cheers!
