Basil oil

Basil oil — sounds like oil with basil. Exactly! And that's pretty much all it is. It's not a complicated recipe, but because it's such an incredibly tasty flavor enhancer, it can't be missing from the Cookinglife blog!

Recipe

Basil oil

Basil oil is a simple and flavorful oil you can make quickly at home. Fresh basil leaves are blended with olive oil in a blender or food processor until a vibrant green mixture forms. Optionally, you can add a clove of garlic for extra flavor. Pour the oil into a clean bottle and use it as a dressing or flavor booster for a variety of dishes.

Equipment

  • Blender
  • Immersion blender or food processor
  • Swing-top bottle or other oil bottle

Ingredients

  • Half a small basil plant
  • 250 ml good-quality olive oil

How to make basil oil?

    1. Snip the stems about 1 cm above the soil (this gives them the best chance to regrow) and wash the basil thoroughly.
    2. Pat dry with a tea towel and place together with the extra vierge bio olijfolie into the food processor. Let it run until you have a beautiful green mixture.
    3. If you like, you can add some fresh garlic, but that’s certainly not required!

This basil oil is delicious over a fresh salad, as a dip with bread, or as a finishing touch on pasta. Store the oil in a tightly sealed bottle in a cool, dark place. That way the oil will stay fresh for up to two weeks.

Want to keep the oil a little longer? Freeze small portions in an ice cube tray and take them out as needed. That way you'll always have a cube of aromatic basil oil on hand to brighten up your dishes.
