Are these Riedel wine glasses dishwasher safe?
Crystal glass and the dishwasher — it's a combination you need to be careful with. Riedel recommends handwashing the Veloce glasses in lukewarm water with a mild dish detergent. That preserves their clarity and keeps the thin walls intact. If you do use the dishwasher, choose a gentle programme at low temperature and make sure the glasses cannot bump against each other.
Why does each glass have a different capacity and shape?
There is real expertise behind this. Riedel designs each glass specifically for a single grape variety so the wine can show at its best. The shape directs how the wine reaches your palate and directly influences the taste experience: • Cabernet/Merlot (829 ml): large format for full-bodied red wines — the volume makes tannins feel softer. • Pinot Noir/Nebbiolo (763 ml): slightly narrower, ideal for elegant, delicate red wines. • Chardonnay (690 ml): a wide glass that opens up the rich, full flavours of white wine. • Sauvignon Blanc (547 ml): narrower and smaller, so the fresh, aromatic notes are well preserved. The different sizes are therefore no coincidence but a deliberate choice for the best flavour experience per wine style.
What material are the glasses made of and are they durable?
The glasses are made of crystal glass — a material known for its exceptional clarity and light refraction. Crystal glass is thinner and lighter than ordinary glass, giving an elegant appearance and a pleasant feel in the hand. In addition, the glasses are scratch-resistant and retain their clarity even after frequent use. So these are glasses that prove themselves in practice.
