Frying Pan with Non-Stick Coating

The pans from SCANPAN and WMF have a standard non-stick coating, while those from all other brands have a ceramic one. Only the ceramic coating is PFAS-free. The standard coating is found on the pans that can go hottest in the oven, and on most that can withstand a metal spatula. For those two requirements, and also for the dishwasher, we have selected pans for you.

Frying Pan with Non-Stick Coating

With the pan, you also choose the coating, and thus whether it contains PFAS. What else a pan can do, you can check on its own product page.

Are you buying a pan with a standard non-stick coating that contains PFAS?

SCANPAN states that its coatings Stratanium and Stratanium+ contain PTFE, a substance from the large group of PFAS substances. These are present on all SCANPAN pans in this overview. According to the brand, the PTFE is fixed in the hardened layer and does not release during normal cooking. We have no information from the manufacturer about the coating of the WMF Profi Resist, so we do not offer those pans as PFAS-free.

If you are looking for a coating without PFAS, it will be a ceramic one here. Pans without a coating are also PFAS-free; they are listed together with the ceramic ones in the frying pans without PFAS. To better understand how safe a coating is, it helps to know what Teflon and PFAS are.

Which coated pan can withstand a metal spatula, the oven, or the dishwasher?

The dividing line on those three points does not always run between standard and ceramic.

Can you continue to use your metal spatula?

In the CTX and Classic Induction pans from SCANPAN, a metal spatula is allowed, as well as in the WMF Profi Resist and HexaCook pans. The HaptIQ from SCANPAN in ø 26 and 28 cm is not intended for a metal spatula. In the other ceramic pans, stick to wood or plastic.

Two lines have a stainless steel honeycomb in the bottom: the WMF Profi Resist with a standard coating, and the hybrid HexaCook pans with a ceramic.

Your metal spatula is allowed in the SCANPAN Frying Pan CTX ø 24 cm. This medium-sized pan has stainless steel on the outside and weighs 1.2 kg.

How hot can your oven be?

The highest oven temperature for the ceramic pans here is 200 °C, while for the SCANPAN pans it is 250 °C. Some of the ceramic pans are not allowed in the oven at all. What the metal under a ceramic layer means for the oven and the weight is stated on the page with ceramic frying pans.

For a recipe above 200 °C, the SCANPAN Frying Pan Classic Induction ø 24 cm can go into the oven, up to 250 °C. It weighs 0.96 kg, less than the CTX in the same size.

If your recipe stays at 200 °C or lower, it can also be done without PFAS, in the ceramic Cookinglife Frying Pan Revolt ø 28 cm.

What does the dishwasher do to a coated pan?

According to our pan expert, a dishwasher tablet is disastrous for the coating, whether standard or ceramic. Still, the product pages of the SCANPAN pans here state that they can simply go in the dishwasher. The WMF Frying Pan Profi Resist ø 28 cm states in the product questions that it is designed for hand washing. With the ceramic pans, it varies per pan.

For those who still use the dishwasher, we have selected the Sola Frying Pan Stonehenge ø 28 cm. It has a ceramic coating and the dishwasher symbol, and is one of the more affordable pans with a coating here.

Does a standard coating last longer than a ceramic one?

An honest yes or no cannot be given to that question. Reviews about both types contradict each other: the same type of coating lasts for years for one and peels off within a few months for another.

According to the manufacturer, superficial scratches from normal use do not make a SCANPAN pan unsafe. If the coating has worn down to the metal, the brand recommends a new pan. We maintain the same moment for a ceramic coating in our store. You can compare your current pan against our explanation of when a frying pan needs to be replaced.

If you want to switch to a pan that has no coating to wear out, choose from the frying pans without a non-stick coating.

Which coating is in which price range?

For loose frying pans from 20 to 28 cm, your budget here almost indicates which coating you will get:

  • Under €50 per pan has a ceramic coating.

  • From €50 to €100, you will find ceramic pans, and also a few with a standard coating.

  • From €100 to €200, there is a standard coating on the pan.

So above €100, you get a standard coating, on a pan that can go hotter in the oven and usually withstands a metal spatula. Whether that coating lasts longer than a ceramic one is not stated on the product pages.
