Why season these pans?

Seasoning the Blackwell frying pans is essential to prevent rust and to build a natural non-stick layer.

How to season your cast-iron frying pans (step by step):

1. Clean
Before you begin, clean your cast-iron pans thoroughly with warm water and a brush. Make sure the Blackwell pans are completely clean.

2. Dry
After cleaning, it is crucial to dry the pan thoroughly. You can also place it on the stove to evaporate any remaining moisture. This prevents rust from forming.

3. Oil
Apply a thin layer of vegetable oil to the inside of the pan. You can also lightly coat the outside for the best finish. Make sure to remove any excess oil with a dry cloth.

4. Heat
Place the Blackwell pan in the oven or on the stove and heat it on high temperature. Leave it in the oven or on the stove until the oil has fully polymerized.
Tip: open a window!

5. Cool
Let the pan cool down in or outside the oven. Repeat the process if needed to create an even stronger non-stick layer.

Can I put these cast-iron frying pans in the dishwasher?

No — the dishwasher is not suitable for cast iron. Choose handwashing: rinse the pans with warm water and a brush, and then dry them immediately and thoroughly. Moisture left on cast iron for too long causes rust.

Are these frying pans suitable for use in the oven as well?

Yes. Cast iron tolerates extremely high temperatures, so you can safely put the pans in the oven. You also see this in the seasoning process: part of it is done in the oven at high temperature. The pans are suitable for all heat sources, including induction, gas, and electric.

Why do I need to season the pans and what happens if I skip that step?

Seasoning is essential for cast iron for two reasons. First, it protects the pan against rust: without a proper protective layer the cast iron is vulnerable to moisture. Second, it builds a natural non-stick layer — not a synthetic coating, but a layer you create yourself with vegetable oil and heat. The oil is fully absorbed into the cast iron during heating and forms a protective layer.

Do the pans get better the more I use them?

Yes, that is one of the properties of cast iron. With each use and with proper care the natural non-stick layer continues to build up. By repeating the seasoning process you achieve an increasingly optimal result. Well-maintained cast-iron pans are made to last for years.

How do I know the seasoning was successful?

The pan is done seasoning when the applied vegetable oil has been fully absorbed after heating at a high temperature. Remove excess oil beforehand with a dry cloth — a layer that is too thick will not be absorbed well by the pan. For an optimal non-stick layer you can repeat the seasoning process one more time.
