Hamburgers met focaccia

What wonderful comfort food a burger can be. While some people are sometimes (or more often) tempted to ‘quickly’ hit the drive-thru, you won't get me to do that. Just look how much more appealing these gluten-free burgers with focaccia bread look. A pre-fab burger really doesn't compare for me, even though some chains now offer gluten-free options. This burger tastes so much better, fresher and purer. And by serving it on a focaccia roll instead of a soggy burger bun, your burger gets even more flavour!

Recipe

Hamburgers with focaccia

Homemade burgers are so much tastier than those from the well-known fast-food chains. Play with the flavors and make them exactly how you like.

Equipment

  • Frying pan
  • Bowl
  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Toaster
  • Oven

Ingredients

  • 300 grams lean ground beef
  • 3 focaccia rolls
  • optional 75 grams (sheep) feta
  • 2 onions
  • 3 handfuls of arugula
  • 1 can of tomato paste (140 grams)
  • 25 small gherkins
  • 3 teaspoons dried basil
  • 3 teaspoons oregano
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dill
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • salt and pepper

Hamburgers with focaccia

    1. Preheat the oven to 200°C if desired
    2. Finely chop one onion and cut the other into half rings.
    3. Mix the ground meat in a bowl with the chopped onion, 2 teaspoons basil, 2 teaspoons oregano, 1 teaspoon thyme and 1 teaspoon dill, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, salt and pepper. Knead into a ball.
    4. Shape the meat into 3 large, flat burgers, preferably square. Fry these burgers in a little olive oil until cooked through (about 5–6 minutes), adding the onion rings to the pan as well.
    5. Mix the tomato paste with 1 teaspoon oregano and 1 teaspoon basil and thin with a little water. Do this by feel, adding a little at a time until it reaches the thickness you like. Season with salt, pepper and garlic powder to taste and give it a try.
    6. Put the focaccia rolls in the toaster or in the oven (5 minutes at 200°C). Slice them open when they're ready.
    7. Spread tomato paste on the bottom half of the focaccia roll. Place some arugula on top, then the burger. Top the burger with onion rings, halved gherkins and some pieces of feta.

These hamburgers with focaccia are a delicious twist on the classic burger. The homemade tomato sauce and the combination of herbs give the burgers an Italian touch that everyone will appreciate.

Serve the burgers immediately after cooking for the best result. The arugula, feta and gherkins provide a fresh and savory balance to the juicy meat.
