Incredible beef köfte curry – inspired by Jamie Oliver

My mother used to make köfte fairly regularly — a dish of spiced meatballs we knew from Greece as soutzoukakia. Originally, köfte (also known as kefta) comes from the Balkans, and it literally means 'meat ball'. Not the most glamorous name 😉 but trust me, it is absolutely delicious!

Trust Jamie Oliver to turn this into something truly spectacular. This recipe comes from his book 15 Minutes and it's one I keep coming back to. The curry sauce is made completely from scratch — fresh tomatoes, turmeric, ginger — and packs an incredible depth of flavour. The meat is wonderfully tender, and with the brown rice loaded with green vegetables, it's a genuinely wholesome meal.

The recipe calls for Patak's rogan josh curry paste, which isn't always easy to find. No worries — regular curry paste or Vindaloo works just as well. It tastes a little different, but every bit as good!

    1. Combine the mince with the lentils, garam masala and a good pinch of salt and pepper in a bowl. With damp hands, shape the mixture into roughly 12 elongated balls. Heat a little oil in a pan and brown them all over.

    2. Cook the rice using two cups of water (1 cup rice to 2 cups water), adding the cardamom pods and halved green beans to the pan while it cooks. Blitz the tomatoes with the peeled ginger, spring onions, half the chilli, the coriander stalks (keep the leafy tops), turmeric, honey, curry paste and coconut milk until smooth. Pour the sauce over the meat in the pan, season with salt and pepper and leave to simmer gently.

    3. By now the rice should have absorbed all the water. Stir in the peas, mix well and leave on a low heat for a few more minutes. Break the papadums and microwave them for about 2 minutes at 800W — they'll curl up slightly and turn nicely golden.

    4. Serve by spooning rice onto the plate, then the köftes with their sauce. Finish with dollops of yoghurt, sliced chilli and chopped coriander. Serve with lemon wedges and the papadums. Enjoy!

This recipe is inspired by Jamie Oliver and comes together surprisingly quickly for such a flavour-packed dish. Adding lentils to the mince gives the köftes extra texture and keeps them wonderfully juicy.

Serve this dish straight away for the best flavour. A spoonful of cool yoghurt and a squeeze of lemon make it complete. Enjoy!
