Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Frying pan
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Cutting board
  • Sharp knife
  • Bowls

Ingredients

  • 100 g oats (fine or coarse, to preference)
  • 400 ml (plant-based) milk
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 large apple (e.g. Elstar or Jonagold)
  • 15 g butter
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 30 g pecans, coarsely chopped

How do you make oat porridge with caramelized apple and pecans?

    1. Put the oats in a saucepan and add the milk (or plant-based milk). Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring regularly.
    2. Turn the heat down and let the oats simmer gently for 5 minutes until a creamy porridge forms. Stir occasionally. Add a pinch of salt.
    3. Meanwhile, peel the apple and cut it into thin slices or cubes. Melt the butter in a frying pan over medium heat.
    4. Add the apple slices to the pan together with the brown sugar and ground cinnamon. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until the apple is soft and lightly caramelized. Keep an eye on the pan so the sugar doesn't burn.
    5. Stir the honey into the porridge and spoon the porridge into bowls.
    6. Place the caramelized apple on top of the porridge, sprinkle the coarsely chopped pecans over it and, if you like, add a splash of milk. Serve immediately.

A good saucepan makes a difference when it comes to creamy porridge. Choose a pan with a thick bottom so the oats cook evenly and don't burn. It's a smart buy: you'll use a pan like that every day and enjoy it for years.

No pecans at home? Walnuts or almonds also work well. And for extra richness, stir a tablespoon of peanut butter into the porridge before serving. Taste and adjust to your liking — that's exactly how cooking works.
