Robert Herder Potato Peeling Knife Steel - 6 cm Blade

Ideal for peeling potatoes and fruit

Susceptible to rust; clean by hand

Robert Herder Potato Peeling Knife Steel - 6 cm Blade

The blade of Robert Herder, known as the crooked mill knife, is perfect for peeling both potatoes and fruit. With a blade length of 6cm and a handle made of beech wood, this knife meets all requirements.

The knives from Robert Herder have long been manufactured by hand in Solingen, Germany. Almost every step in the production process is carried out (in part) by hand. The blade is sharpened by hand and the handle receives a manual sanding. These knives are made of high-quality carbon steel (carbon steel) and are sharpened using the special "dunschliff" method. This makes them thinner and easier to cut. The use of carbon steel makes these knives sharp longer, but more susceptible to rusting. To prevent this, the knives should be cleaned and dried by hand immediately after use.

This, for me, is one of the most beautiful examples of craftsmanship you can use in the kitchen. Robert Herder has been making this product by hand in Solingen for generations, and you can tell, the carbon steel is ground using the dunschliff method, which makes the blade thinner and lets it glide effortlessly through potato skins or fruit. Just be mindful of the care: carbon steel needs a bit of attention, wash it by hand immediately after use and dry it thoroughly, and it will last for years. The beechwood handle feels nice in the hand and the 6 cm curved blade does exactly what it was made for. If you choose quality over convenience, you really end up with something special.

FAQ

Can I wash this knife in the dishwasher?
No — do not wash this knife in the dishwasher. The blade is made of carbon steel, and that material is prone to rust. The dishwasher greatly accelerates that process. This is how to keep the knife in top condition: • Wash it by hand immediately after use • Dry it thoroughly right away • Store it in a dry place With this simple routine, the blade will stay sharp and in good condition.
How do I prevent rust from forming on the blade?
The blade is made of high-quality carbon steel — it wears less quickly than stainless steel, but requires a bit more care. Fortunately, the maintenance is simple. • Clean the knife immediately after use — never leave it wet or damp • Dry it completely right away with a dry cloth • Store it dry, not in a damp drawer or near the sink If you treat the knife this way, you effectively prevent rust.
Is this knife also suitable for other fruits and vegetables, or only for potatoes?
This knife is more versatile than the name suggests. The curved shape — also called the 'kromme molenmesje' — works excellently for: • Peeling potatoes • Peeling fruit, such as apples and pears The 6 cm blade length and the curved edge give you good control when peeling round and irregular shapes.
Why does this knife cut more easily than a regular paring knife?
That comes down to two things: the material and the sharpening method. • Carbon steel holds a sharp edge longer than ordinary stainless steel • The 'dunschliff' method — a special sharpening technique from Solingen — makes the blade thinner than usual, allowing it to glide effortlessly through peels In addition, each knife is hand-sharpened by craftsmen in Solingen, Germany, which ensures consistent, high sharpness.
Is the handle suitable for people who cook a lot, or does it wear out quickly?
The handle is made of beech wood — a type of wood that has been used for knife handles for centuries, precisely because of its sturdiness and pleasant grip. It is a deliberate choice of material, not a compromise. Here are a few practical maintenance tips: • Do not soak the handle in water • Always dry it immediately after use • Do not store the knife for long periods in a damp place Beech wood that is kept well-dried will last for many years.
