Gluten-free, sugar-free baked donuts

I can’t help but drool over the photos on Suzanne and Johan’s blog, where they capture the most delicious recipes so beautifully. Suzanne is a stylist and Johan is a photographer (and teacher), and that turns out to be the perfect combination for great photos. Recently I saw this lovely recipe for gluten-free, sugar-free baked donuts on their blog and I just had to make it. I tweaked the recipe slightly because I didn’t have an egg at home, which made it suitable for vegans as well. Lucky for me, the donuts worked without an egg.

Why fry when you can simply bake them? This is much healthier and just as tasty. Try this version of donuts yourself.

    1. Preheat the oven to 180°C.
    2. Grease the donut pan with coconut oil.
    3. Blend the banana and applesauce until smooth, then add the vanilla extract and the coconut oil. Blend well. In another bowl, combine the dry ingredients: coconut flour, almond flour, flaxseed, cinnamon, baking powder and salt. Stir briefly, then add the banana mixture and mix the batter thoroughly.
    4. Spoon the batter into the donut pan and smooth the tops.
    5. Bake the donuts in the center of the oven for 35-40 minutes, until golden brown.
    6. Let the donuts cool briefly before removing them from the pan. Do this carefully so they stay whole! Serve with a nice soy cappuccino and you’ll have a fantastic start to your day.

These gluten-free, sugar-free donuts are a delicious and healthy treat for the whole family. Thanks to the ripe banana and applesauce they get natural sweetness without adding sugar. Perfect for a conscious start to the day!

Want to make the donuts a bit more festive? Top them with some fresh fruit, a tablespoon of nut butter or a thin layer of dark chocolate. That way you turn a healthy base recipe into a real treat for any time of the day.
