How does an OXO spiralizer work?

Make sure both ends of your ingredient are cut as straight as possible — the device will turn more smoothly and you’ll get more even spirals.

Secure the device

Place the spiralizer on a clean, flat countertop. Press the suction pad firmly on the underside of the device so it sticks well. A stable base is important because otherwise the unit will slide while turning and slicing becomes much less pleasant. Once you click the suction pad in place, you’ll have both hands free for cutting.

Choose and install the right blade

Flip the lever on the side of the device to the left. This creates space to slide the desired blade into the top of the unit. Click it firmly into place before proceeding. Which blade you choose depends on what you want to make: fine spaghetti strands, wider ribbons or another pattern. Never change a blade while an ingredient is still held in the device.

Choose and install the right blade

Prepare your ingredient

This is the step that makes the difference. Make sure the ingredient you’re going to slice has straight, flat cutting faces on both ends. A slanted side causes uneven strands and extra resistance when turning. Peel the ingredient if necessary and check that the diameter fits inside the device. Trimming overly thick vegetables at the side isn’t a crime — it’s clever.

Secure the ingredient

Clamp the ingredient between the blade and the round pronged piece on the other side. The prongs pierce the ingredient slightly so it can’t spin or slip away. Check that it’s held firmly by turning it gently. If it comes loose, reseat it and press a little firmer.

Spiralize

Turn the handle or the ingredient evenly while you press it gently forward toward the blade. Have a bowl or plate ready under the device to catch the strands. Rotate at a steady, even pace for the best results. At the end of the ingredient there’s always a small leftover piece that doesn’t go through the blade — that’s normal and you can use it separately in a soup or salad.

Clean the device after use

Carefully remove the blade from the top and rinse it immediately under lukewarm water. Watch out for the sharp edges. Clean the rest of the device with a damp cloth or rinse it, depending on the manufacturer’s recommendations. Dry all parts thoroughly before storing. A clean device cuts better and lasts longer — a small effort that pays off.

A spiralizer is a clever kitchen tool that transforms vegetables and fruit into thin spirals or ribbons. Ideal if you want variety with healthy meals, creative salads or a tasty pasta alternative. The device works with a rotating cutting mechanism operated by a handle, and with the right setting you’ll have a beautiful strand on your cutting board within seconds.

Most spiralizers use a suction base to keep the unit steady on the countertop, and interchangeable blades for different types of strands. Whether you want fine angel-hair ribbons or wide vegetable spaghetti, with the right blade and technique you can flawlessly turn ingredients into a culinary eye-catcher. Suitable for zucchini, carrot, beet, cucumber, apple and more.
