How do you clean a Coravin wine system?

Always flush the needle immediately after use with argon gas. That prevents wine residue in the hollow needle and keeps everything in top condition.

What do you need for cleaning?

Make sure you have the following on hand before you begin:

  1. A full argon capsule in the system.
  2. Lukewarm water in a glass or bowl.
  3. A soft, dry cloth for the housing.
  4. Optionally a replacement needle if the current needle is blocked or damaged.
What do you need for cleaning?

Step 1: Flush the needle with argon gas

Immediately after pouring a glass of wine, activate the system briefly over an empty glass or bowl. Press the lever so the argon gas flows through the hollow needle. This blows any wine residue out of the needle and prevents it from drying and clogging. Do this every time after use. It takes five seconds and saves you a lot of hassle later.

Step 1: Flush the needle with argon gas

Step 2: Clean the needle with lukewarm water

For a more thorough cleaning, briefly dip the needle in a glass of lukewarm water. Then press the lever so the water is drawn through the needle and expelled again. Repeat this two to three times until the water stays clear. Do not use soap or cleaning agents, as their residues can later be tasted in the wine and that is exactly what you want to avoid.

Step 2: Clean the needle with lukewarm water

Step 3: Clean the housing

Wipe the outside of the system with a soft, lightly damp cloth. Be careful that no water gets into the mechanical parts or the capsule area. Dry the whole unit thoroughly with a dry cloth. The system should never be placed in the dishwasher. That may sound obvious, but it's a common mistake that can irreparably damage the device.

Step 3: Clean the housing

Step 4: Check and replace the needle if necessary

Over time a needle can wear or become structurally blocked, even after flushing. Inspect the needle regularly for visible damage or discoloration. Is the wine flowing less smoothly than usual? Then it's time for a replacement needle. Needles are sold separately and are easy to change yourself. A new needle immediately improves flow and gives a cleaner taste.

Step 4: Check and replace the needle if necessary

Step 5: Store the system correctly

Store the system upright in a dry, cool place, out of direct sunlight. Make sure the argon capsule is not empty when you put the system away. An empty capsule draws moisture into the system and that's something you want to avoid. Also check the stoppers you place on wine bottles: after multiple uses they can wear slightly. Replace them in time for an optimal seal and preservation of the wine.

Step 5: Store the system correctly

A Coravin wine system works with a hollow needle and argon gas to pour wine without opening the bottle. Precisely because the needle comes into direct contact with the wine, regular cleaning is not optional. Wine residue in the needle can clog the system and affect the taste of future glasses. A clean system means an honest taste every time, exactly as the winemaker intended.

Maintaining a wine system may sound technical, but it's actually straightforward. With a few simple steps and the right accessories, such as replacement needles and stoppers, you can keep the system in optimal condition. That way you’ll benefit for years from the technology that keeps wine fresh with argon gas, and you’ll never have to open a bottle for a single glass again.
