Materiales necesarios

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Martini glass
  • Citrus press
  • Fine strainer
  • Measuring cup or jigger
  • Small dish (for the sugar)
  • Toothpick

Ingredientes

  • 60 ml vodka
  • 40 ml elderflower liqueur (such as St-Germain or Elderflower)
  • 20 ml fresh lime juice (about 1 lime)
  • 10 ml simple syrup
  • 2 limes (also for the rim)
  • 4 tbsp black colored sugar (for the rim)
  • 2 drops black food coloring

How do you make a Midnight Poison cocktail?

    1. Place the cocktail glasses in the freezer for at least 15 minutes. An ice-cold glass keeps the cocktail colder longer and prevents the ice from melting too quickly.
    2. Juice the limes and strain the juice. Fresh juice really makes the difference: it adds more brightness and a clearer flavor than bottled juice.
    3. Add a generous handful of ice cubes to the cocktail shaker. Fill the shaker at least halfway with ice so the drink cools properly while shaking.
    4. Add the vodka, elderflower liqueur, fresh lime juice and simple syrup to the shaker. The elderflower liqueur gives the deep purple hue and a floral sweetness that balances nicely with the tart citrus.
    5. Close the shaker tightly and shake vigorously for 15 seconds. You'll feel the shaker turn ice-cold in your hands. That's exactly the moment the cocktail is ready.
    6. Take the glasses out of the freezer. Rub the rim of each glass lightly with a wedge of lime and then dip the rim into the black colored sugar. This gives the typical Halloween touch.
    7. Strain the cocktail through the shaker's fine strainer directly into the glasses. No ice chunks in the glass: the cocktail should be clear and smooth.
    8. For garnish, add a drop of black food coloring to the surface of the cocktail and drag a spiderweb pattern through it with a toothpick. Serve immediately.

Make black sugar for the rim yourself by mixing regular white caster sugar with a few drops of black food coloring and stirring well until the color is even. Let it dry briefly on a plate before dipping the rim. If you want the cocktail to have a stronger color, add an extra splash of elderflower liqueur. Always shake the cocktail well: at least 15 seconds. That's not overkill — good shaking cools the drink to just above freezing and creates a perfect texture.

Want to make a non-alcoholic version? Replace the vodka with sparkling water and use elderflower soda instead of the liqueur. The result is just as festively purple. For a larger group you can easily multiply the ingredients and prepare the mix in a pitcher, without the sugar and ice. Then shake each glass individually with ice just before serving. You can prepare the garnished rim with black sugar earlier in the day: simply put the glasses back in the fridge afterward.
