What should you look for when buying a coffee grinder?

A good coffee grinder is important for making a great cup of fresh coffee. When you grind coffee beans fresh, the flavor of the beans comes out fully. You can then wake up in the morning and enjoy a fragrant and aromatic cup of coffee.

Manual or electric coffee grinder

The first thing you run into when you want to buy a coffee grinder is whether to choose a manual or an electric coffee grinder. Choosing a coffee grinder depends on how you make coffee. A manual coffee grinder is recommended, for example, for a coffee maker, pour-over or for a cafetière. You can conveniently take a manual coffee grinder with you anywhere, so you can grind fresh beans even while camping. In fact, you can just use it when you have no electricity at your disposal.

The electric coffee grinder is recommended when you have an espresso machine or percolator. This is because an electric grinder is able to grind the coffee beans more finely. Moreover, the beans are ground more evenly with an electric coffee grinder. At least, when you have a grinder with grinding discs. When coffee beans are ground unevenly, it causes uneven extraction. As a result, not all of the aromas are extracted from the coffee beans, which, of course, is a waste.

Speed of electric coffee grinder

When you purchase an electric coffee grinder, it is important to look at the speed of the bean grinder. When the speed is high, the coffee beans may be ground quickly, but you also have the chance that you burn the coffee. Due to the high speed, heat is released and this is released on coffee. The result is a bitter taste. Nothing is worse than one morning a nice cup of coffee and then suddenly a dirty cup the next morning.

Brand of coffee grinder

Which brand of coffee grinder works best is personal, every brand and coffee grinder has its own advantages and disadvantages. Are you a style junkie and crazy of the fifties? There is also the brand Rig-Tig, This is Danish for just right. They make coffee grinders that look at details and sustainability. Another Danish family business that makes coffee grinders is Bodum. For example, they make a coffee grinder with a conical blackberry, which makes it make less noise during grinding.

Grinding discs or blades

We have already talked about manual or electric grinding and the speed of the machine. In addition, it is important to consider what you will be grinding with - grinding discs or blades? The biggest difference between the two is the consistency of the grind. A coffee grinder with blades chops the beans more than it grinds them. As a result, you get more irregularities in the coffee faster. When you use the French press brewing method, for example, this does not matter, but for an espresso machine it is less suitable. In the latter case, it is better to go for a coffee grinder with grinding discs.

Conical or ceramic grinding discs

If you go for grinding discs, you have two options to choose from. There are conical grinding discs and you have flat grinding discs. They both have their own advantages and disadvantages. The main issue is how you prefer to brew your coffee. The flat grinding discs have the advantage that the coffee grind is even and the disadvantage that you can get heat production during grinding. The conical grinding discs have this exactly reversed, the advantage being no heat production and the disadvantage being less even coffee grind. The flat grinding discs combine well with ceramics. An advantage of ceramic is that this material does not heat up as quickly. For conical grinding discs, metal is most commonly used, this is largely because it is more economical than ceramic.
