How do you care for earthenware tableware?

Never use a metal scouring pad on earthenware: a soft sponge does the job and protects the glaze.

First check whether your tableware is dishwasher-safe

Not every piece of earthenware should just go into the dishwasher. Many earthenware pieces are dishwasher-safe, but err on the side of caution. Always check the manufacturer's information. In doubt? Opt for handwashing. It's gentler on the glaze and will keep your tableware looking good longer.

Handwashing: how to do it properly

  1. Use lukewarm water, not boiling water. Extreme heat damages the glaze.
  2. Choose a mild dish soap. Harsh cleaners can dull the earthenware's color.
  3. Use a soft sponge or cloth. Scratches should be avoided, they can't be repaired.
  4. Rinse thoroughly and dry the tableware immediately with a dry cloth. Don't leave it damp for too long.

In the dishwasher: do this

Still using the dishwasher? Always choose a gentle program with a lower temperature, max 50°C. Place the plates with enough space between them so they don't knock together. Don't use gel tabs with extra-strong formulas. Regular dishwasher detergent in a normal amount is enough.

Use in the oven or microwave

Earthenware is generally oven-safe, but watch out for two things. Never put a cold piece directly into a hot oven. Let the tableware reach room temperature first to avoid cracks from thermal shock. For the microwave: check whether the specific piece is suitable. Glazes with metallic accents should not go in the microwave.

Removing stubborn stains

Got a stubborn food stain? Let the piece soak in lukewarm water with a splash of dish soap. After about fifteen minutes most baked-on food will loosen easily. Then gently rub with a soft sponge. Still not working? A paste of baking soda and water is a no-nonsense solution. Apply it, let it sit for five minutes and rinse off.

Storage and stacking

Earthenware scratches more easily than you think if you stack pieces without protection. Place a felt pad, a piece of kitchen paper, or a thin tea towel between plates. This prevents scratches on the glaze and keeps the tableware looking appetizing. Store the pieces dry and at room temperature.

Cracks and chips: what now?

A small chip on the rim doesn't have to be a reason to throw a piece away. Use and handle the piece more gently and keep it separate from the items you use most often. Are there hairline cracks in the glaze without the piece breaking? That's called 'crazing'. It's often normal for earthenware and doesn't affect function, but the tableware becomes harder to clean hygienically. In that case use it for decorative purposes or for dry goods.

Enjoyment begins with proper care

Earthenware tableware is not a disposable product. It's a choice for character at the table, for a shared meal that also matters visually. Treat it with a little care and it will become part of the memories you create at the table. That's what quality means: long-lasting pleasure, day after day.

Earthenware tableware requires a bit more attention than porcelain or stoneware, but it's worth it. Because of earthenware's porous nature it's more sensitive to moisture, strong odors and sudden temperature changes. Knowing that prevents most damage. Always store this type of tableware dry, don't stack plates too heavily and, if necessary, use a felt pad between pieces.

Whether you opt for earthy tones or deep, rich colors: earthenware tableware enriches every table. With the right daily care you'll keep the glaze intact, the colors vibrant, and enjoy the same tableware year after year. Quality doesn't have to be a hassle. A few smart habits are enough.
