Jägertee

Gepubliceerd op

Jägertee is the ultimate winter-sports drink. In Austria you drink it after a day on the slopes in the ski hut to warm up. It’s a mix of strong black tea with red wine, rum and spices like cinnamon, clove and orange. Stronger than mulled wine, with a distinct, spicy character from the tea. It brings the après-ski atmosphere right into your home, perfect for a winter get-together or a ski party.

Equipment

  • Cooking Pot
  • Electric Kettle
  • Sieve
  • Heatproof glasses

Ingredients

  • 750 ml water
  • 4 bags strong black tea
  • 250 ml red wine
  • 150 ml brown rum
  • 75 g brown sugar
  • 1 unwaxed orange, sliced
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 5 cloves
  • 1 star anise

Prepare

  1. Bring the water to a boil and steep the tea for 5 minutes. Remove the tea bags.
  2. Put the tea with the red wine, sugar, orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves and star anise into a pot.
  3. Warm over low heat until it starts to steam and let steep for 10 minutes. Do not boil, otherwise the alcohol will evaporate.
  4. Remove the pot from the heat and stir in the rum.
  5. Taste and add more sugar if needed. Strain into heatproof glasses and garnish with an orange slice.

Real Austrian jägertee: in the ski huts jägertee is often made with Inländer-Rum, a spiced Austrian rum with a hint of vanilla, and sometimes with a splash of Obstler or Schnaps. You can also buy those in the Netherlands. If you want it milder, use less rum and top up with extra tea. Prefer no red wine? Then make a simple version with only tea, rum, sugar and spices, as some ski huts serve it.

Serving and prepping ahead: jägertee is lovely in double-walled glasses, which keep the drink warm and protect your fingers. The tea with wine and spices can be prepared a few hours in advance. Gently warm it up just before serving and only then add the rum. Great with Kaiserschmarrn or Apfelstrudel to complete the winter-sports vibe. Drink in moderation, because jägertee is stronger than you think.
