Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Cooking Pot
  • Cutting board
  • Bowls
  • Oven or Air Fryer

Ingredients

  • 1 baguette
  • 100 g soft butter
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 750 g baby potatoes
  • 4 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 2 spring onions, sliced
  • 1 cucumber
  • 250 g cherry tomatoes
  • 1 red onion
  • 2 tart apples
  • 2 celery stalks
  • 50 g walnuts
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp white wine vinegar
  • 1 pinch of salt

Prepare

  1. Herbed baguette: mix the butter with the garlic and half the parsley. Cut the baguette, spread the mixture into the slits and bake for 10 minutes in the oven or Air Fryer at 200 °C.
  2. Potato salad: boil the baby potatoes until tender in about 15 minutes, let cool, halve them and mix with the mayonnaise, spring onions, the remaining parsley and a pinch of salt.
  3. Cucumber and tomato salad: cut the cucumber and cherry tomatoes into pieces, slice the red onion thinly, and toss with olive oil, vinegar and salt.
  4. Waldorf salad: dice the apples and celery stalks, roughly chop the walnuts and mix with a spoonful of mayonnaise.
  5. Arrange all the side dishes in attractive bowls on the table. The salads can be made a few hours ahead and stored covered in the refrigerator.
  6. Top up the table with store-bought extras such as crudités, pickles, pickled pearl onions and a platter of baguette.

More gourmet side dishes: try a pasta salad with pesto and sun-dried tomato, a couscous salad with feta and mint, a fresh coleslaw, grilled corn on the cob, roasted baby potatoes with rosemary or a green salad with goat cheese and honey. Also nice on the table: a board with cheese and olives, tzatziki with pita bread, or a platter of fruit with grapes and tangerines for snacking. Aim for a balance between something starchy, something fresh and something creamy.

How many side dishes do you need? For 4 persons two or three side dishes alongside the baguette are usually enough: for example choose a potato dish, a fresh salad and a tray of crudités. More variety is cozy but also means more leftovers. Make the salads in advance and store them covered in the fridge; add dressing just before serving so the greens stay crisp.
