Gele Peter cocktail (with or without alcohol)

The Gele Peter doesn't need fancy ingredients and yet it's always a hit. Equal parts orange juice and bitter lemon, a good bowl of ice and you're done. Want to make it a party? Then add a shot of vodka. Serve it in a roomy glass so the ice can do its job — a lukewarm Gele Peter is no Gele Peter.

Whether you make it for two or for a whole group: with the right cocktail glasses and supplies you put it on the table the way it should be: cold, refreshing and with a smile.

The Gele Peter is the classic of the padel court and the golf course: orange juice and bitter lemon over ice. Optionally add a splash of vodka for those who enjoy it.

Equipment

  • Highball glasses
  • Cocktail spoon
  • Carafe (for large groups)
  • Ice cube tray
  • Citrus juicer (for fresh orange juice)

Ingredients

  • 100 ml orange juice per person (freshly squeezed or from a carton)
  • 100 ml bitter lemon per person
  • 35 ml vodka per person (optional)
  • Ice cubes, plenty
  • Slice of orange or lemon for garnish (optional)

How to make a Gele Peter?

    1. Juice the oranges or use ready-made orange juice. You need about 100 ml per person.
    2. Fill the glasses generously with ice cubes. Large cubes work best: they melt more slowly and dilute your drink less quickly.
    3. Pour 100 ml of orange juice over the ice per glass.
    4. Add 100 ml of bitter lemon per glass. Pour it in slowly so the bubbles don't disappear right away.
    5. Optional: add a shot of vodka (about 35 ml) for an alcoholic version.
    6. Stir gently with a long cocktail spoon from bottom to top so everything mixes well without stirring out all the carbonation.
    7. Garnish if you like with a slice of orange or lemon on the rim of the glass. Serve immediately.

The Gele Peter is at its best ice-cold and drunk immediately after making. Making it for a larger group? Then mix everything in a large carafe and put it on the table with a bucket of ice next to it. That way guests can serve themselves and everything stays nicely cold.

Large ice cubes are really worth it. They melt much more slowly than small pieces and keep your drink at the right temperature longer without diluting it. A good ice cube tray is a small investment you'll get back with every drink.
