Alcohol-free mulled wine

Gepubliceerd op

With this alcohol-free mulled wine everyone can enjoy the scent and taste of the Christmas market: children, designated drivers, pregnant guests and anyone who doesn't drink alcohol. Instead of wine use red grape juice with a little blackcurrant juice for depth, and a splash of strong rooibos tea for the light bitterness wine normally provides. With orange, cinnamon, cloves and star anise it tastes surprisingly authentic. Warm, spiced and festive.

Equipment

  • Cooking pot with lid
  • Strainer
  • Heatproof glasses or mugs

Ingredients

  • 750 ml red grape juice
  • 250 ml blackcurrant juice
  • 250 ml rooibos tea, strong-brewed
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 unwaxed orange, sliced
  • 1/2 lemon, sliced
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 6 cloves
  • 2 star anise

Prepare

  1. Put the red grape juice, blackcurrant juice and rooibos tea in a pan.
  2. Add the honey, slices of orange and lemon, cinnamon, cloves and star anise.
  3. Heat over low heat until steaming and let steep gently for 15 minutes with the lid on the pan.
  4. Taste and add more honey if needed, or a splash of lemon juice for extra brightness.
  5. Pour through a strainer into heatproof glasses or mugs and garnish with an orange slice and a cinnamon stick.

Why rooibos tea? Wine has tannins, a slightly dry, bitter note that balances the sweet fruit. Without that, alcohol-free mulled wine can quickly taste like overly sweet squash. A splash of strong rooibos or black tea brings back that dry depth. Rooibos contains no caffeine, so it's also suitable for children in the evening. If you want it even fuller, replace part of the grape juice with alcohol-free red wine; it's becoming easier to find.

For a party: make a large pot of alcohol-free mulled wine next to the regular one, and put a clear sign by it. Kids love getting their own cinnamon stick to use as a stirrer. You can make the mulled wine a few hours ahead and keep it warm on the lowest heat. Leftovers keep for two days in the fridge; gently reheat. Also nice chilled with sparkling water as a Christmas lemonade.
